10 Tips to Help You Become a Better Actor

Hollywood is made up of stars and superstars. No, really, it’s true. You may be an amazing actor who can pull off any role perfectly, but unless you can market yourself in a way that will bring the right people to you… your lifelong dream might remain just that: A dream. Here are 10 tips to help you become a better actor and land the acting roles you’ve always wanted!

ACTING TIP #1: Don’t Be Afraid to Fail

It is imperative that you build resilience so that you don’t fear failure. History has shown that the names of the people you hear frequently or those who you will remember for the rest of your life failed more than they succeeded; however, they still achieved success.

ACTING TIP #2: Acting Is All About Imagination

The ability to imagine yourself in another person’s shoes is essential for good acting. To be a good actor, you need to be able to put yourself in the mindset of the character you’re playing. This means understanding their motivations, emotions, and thoughts. It’s important to be able to empathize with your character so that you can portray them accurately on screen or on stage.

ACTING TIP #3: GOOD ACTORS ARE GOOD OBSERVERS

By observing how real people behave and how they express themselves, you can improve your abilities as an actor. For example, by observing people’s facial expressions and mannerisms, you will be able to portray characters more effectively.

ACTING TIP #4: KEEP YOUR EMOTIONS IN CONTROL

When you’re performing, it’s important to be in control of your own emotions so that you can convincingly portray the emotions of your character. If you’re feeling angry or upset, it will be difficult to convincingly portray a happy or calm character. Learning how to control your emotions will help you give better performances overall.

ACTING TIP #5: BUILDING CONNECTIONS IS JUST AS IMPORTANT

Harsh but true, the newer you are in the industry, the less you are considered for a role; however, you can “get your foot in the door” by getting your name out there and learning the names of companies and managers you could approach when you get better. Affiliating yourself with smaller companies not only helps you grow but also helps them grow.

ACTING TIP #6: BE PREPARED FOR A LOT OF HARD WORK

Acting is a lot of hard work. You need to be prepared to put in the hours to perfect your craft. This means taking acting classes, studying other actors, and learning as much as you can about the art of acting. If you’re not willing to put in the hard work, then acting may not be for you. There are going to be long nights where you only get a couple of hours of sleep but it will all be worth it in the end.

ACTING TIP #7: PROFESSIONALISM GOES A LONG WAY

When you’re auditioning for roles or working on a film set, it’s important to be professional at all times. This means being punctual, prepared, and respectful of those around you. Remember that your actions reflect on the whole cast and crew, so it’s important to always be on your best behavior. Even if you are not into what you are currently working on you should always try your best to leave a good impression.

ACTING TIP #8: BE FLEXIBLE

No matter what field you’re in, being able to adapt to changes is essential for success. This is especially true in acting, where last-minute changes to the script or shooting schedule are not uncommon. While this can be difficult, it’s an important skill to develop if you want to be successful in the acting world.

ACTING TIP #9: DEVELOP THICK SKIN

Rejection is something that all actors face. It’s important to remember that you will not get every role that you audition for and that’s OK. The most important thing is that you stay humble, work hard and continue to push yourself further than ever before. And that brings me to my final tip.

ACTING TIP #10: NEVER GIVE UP!

In the next 10 years, imagine yourself achieving all the goals you’ve set for yourself. Imagine yourself in a place that makes you feel good about the work you’ve done and proud of what you’ve accomplished. If you can see that future for yourself, it’s because you’ve decided to keep pushing forward even when things get tough. You haven’t given up on your dreams and you haven’t given up on yourself. Keep up the good work for the next 10 years and beyond!

Hopefully, these 10 tips to help you become a better actor will assist you in getting yourself recognized and positioned for long-term industry success. At the very least, you should be able to apply some of the tips to create a unique persona that sets you apart from your peers and enhances your visibility.
